Newsletter Term 1, Week 8

Sheep: We bid farewell to the boys last week. Apparently they are enjoying themselves in their lovely new home in the Mudgee area.

Planting: Thank you to everyone who helped prepare the garden beds and also with planting last Friday. The beds are now full of yummy winter crops.

ReadySetGrow: Our school has just joined Hornsby Council’s Ready Set Grow Program. This is an exciting initiative of the council to help support local school with their food gardens. During the past month teachers have been invited to attend two practical workshops.

Schoolyard Safari: Year 2 having been making good use of the garden lately. As part of their ‘schoolyard Safari’ Science unit they have been searching the garden for minibeasts.

Bulbs: If you have forgotten to place your order for bulbs, we have extended the closing date until Thursday 21st March. Please put orders in the Ecogarden box near office.

Next Meeting: Our next meeting is at 7:00pm Tuesday 19th March in Miss Scanlon’s room. We always welcome new members.

Mr Green the Gecko says ...

Did you know that milk can be used as a fungicide on tomatoes? Use a mixture of 1 part milk and 9 parts water to spray on your crop.

Year 2M planting basil and chives for herb pizzas.

 Year 1 classes planting the gecko garden for pizza toppings and crunch and sip supplies.

 Year 6 planting turnips and other veggies for a stew.

 
 Lots of snow peas for Year 5.

Pesto & Pasta Year 3Z

Making pesto from the basil in the school garden:




Pestosaurus Recipe

  • Basil leaves (enough for 4 cups of well-packed leaves)
  • 4 tablespoons of toasted sunflower seeds
  • Parmesan cheese (to make 2/3 cup)
  • 1 large or 2 small garlic cloves
  • 1 cup olive oil
  • ½ lemon (enough for 2 tablespoon of juice)
 Add all above ingredients to a food processor and process until a smooth paste is formed. Add the pesto to cooked dinosaur pasta (Coles Brand). Enjoy!

Bulb Fundraiser
Students will be receiving a bulb brochure this week. This is a fund raiser for the Ecogarden. Please return your order to the Parents & Citizens (P&C) letterbox located in the foyer of the school office, by Thursday March 15.

If you would like to be regularly updated with news from the garden. Please contact Ms Scanlon to be added to the Ecogarden news group.

Planting Day
There will be a planting day on Friday 15th March. If you can spare some time please contact Rhonda

Bunnings Barbeque
We will be having our first Bunnings barbeque on Sunday May 19 at Thornleigh. We will need a lot of volunteers on the day.

Did you know that organic honey can be used to propagate your plants? Just dip your fresh cutting, with a 1/3 leaves removed, into the honey and then plant in an open free draining soil mix.
