Newsletter Term 3, Week 8

Lambs – Help Needed
As we approach the holidays we are seeking families to come and look after the lambs during the holidays. By then they will be off bottles and involvement will be; letting them out of their house in the morning, taking them for a walk, feeding them lucerne and pellets, locking them up at night!
If this is something you are able to do please email – availability, preference of days, contact number and a roster will be emailed to you closer to the date!

Election Cake Stall
To keep financial in feeding our lambs we are hosting a cake stall for the upcoming election, 9th September. Plates for cake donations were sent home last week. If you need a replacement or would like a cake/ slice box please see the school office. If you are available to come and help out on the stall please follow the link below to sign up for an hour or two! www.SignUpGenius.com/go/5080E44AFA92CA1F85-election

Support Needed!
As we move through the year we are faced with losing some very important members of the Eco Garden Committee as their youngest children move onto High School. Involvement with the Eco garden requires a team effort, and input can vary dependant on your personal time. The main activities and events are overseen and liaised by school staff. The three main areas where help is required:

Animals – purchasing stock feed or arranging for it to be purchased, assistance with cleaning out their house, water bowl/ trough, restocking their straw/ sawdust to make their homes comfy. All of these jobs can be done outside of school hours or on weekends.
Gardens- watering them as required, purchasing or organising to be purchased new vegies for planting, assisting the classes with planting and harvesting when required. Again these jobs can be done outside of school hours or a quick water just before/after pick up and drop off on a regular basis works too!

Cooking- Using and cooking the harvested produce from the gardens is a key element of their purpose. Cooking is always assisted by parents from the classes cooking and also the class teacher. Involvement with cooking requires liaising with class teachers, organising extra needed ingredients, being available to do cooking as needed. This role is mostly during school hours but can be arranged around your schedule.

Eco Garden has a committee who meet once a month in the school Staffroom to discuss integration of the garden area into school activities, maintenance and upkeep of the area, animals and also fundraising required to support the gardens. Attendance at meetings is not a compulsory requirement and minutes can be emailed to keep you updated. If any of these roles feel like something you are interested in or would like to take on either
contact Briony Scanlan or call the school office to arrange a meeting or complete the form below and return to your child’s class teacher. We would love to see the gardens and animals remain a key part of our school but greater help and support is needed!

Newsletter: Term 1, Week 2

Welcome Back for 2017!

Thanks
A great big thank you to the families that baby sat our chooks during the holidays! The “chooky” girls are back and loving all of the child attention again.

Rosters
Are you interested in minding the school chooks for a weekend? It simply requires collecting the keys and weekend food on Friday afternoon and dropping by to feed, change their water and say hello on Saturday and Sunday of the weekend. You would be rostered on for approximately one weekend per term. If this sounds like a job for you please contact Briony Scanlon.

Meeting
Eco Garden Meetings are held each month on the third Wednesday of the month at 7pm in the staffroom, during term times. Our next meeting is on the 15th February. New members are always welcome. The first meeting of the year will look at replanting the gardens and plans for the year.

Being involved
The Eco Garden is a large part of the school at Hornsby Heights PS and involves many facets and people. There is gardening, animal minding, cooking, cake stalls and BBQs, building of infrastructure and lesson support. If you feel this is something you may be interested in or would like to find out more please come along to a meeting or let Rhonda French know. Many hands make light work.

Animal Update
At the end of the year Rosie and Daisy were taken to the farm near Dubbo where they joined Lola, Chanel, Coco and their babies. They have settled happily into the little family and are enjoying some big paddock time. In exciting news Chanel had twins on the 30th January and is doing a great job looking after two babies in this hot weather

Newsletter: Term 4, Week 2

Chooks
A massive big thank you to the Cox family for taking such wonderful care of our 5 girls (chooks) at their house during the holidays. The girls have come back looking fat and happy and are laying lots of fresh eggs.

If you would like to have this opportunity over Christmas holidays please contact Miss Scanlon or Rhonda Frensch

Lambs
An equally big thanks to all of the wonderful families who kindly volunteered a day or two to come and visit and look after the lambs during the holidays. This enabled us to keep them at school. Their holidays were spent walking the school, playing and getting lots of pats. The support and help of these families is crucial to the continuation of the animals staying at Hornsby heights and we are very grateful. Daisy and Rosie too havegrown and are now enjoying time in the portable pen and visits from different classes each day.

Fence

If you have visited the school you may notice that a new fence has been installed around the Eco Garden Bush Tucker Garden. This fence has been a long term project. Students in Years 3-4 over the past 18 months have done drawings during Interest Group time on Friday. These drawings have been transferred onto fence palings and painted. It is a wonderful display of student art work. A big thanks to Greg Robinson and John's Paint and
Hardware (Hornsby) for the donation of the paint. The colour range was amazing and assisted greatly in the transferring of student drawing as similar to their original as possible.

Meeting
The next Eco Garden meeting will be held on Wednesday 16th November in Miss Scanlon's classroom from
7pm.

Information on donating baked goods will come home with the plates. We will be looking for volunteers to assist with pricing and sorting cakes on Friday afternoon and selling cakes on Saturday morning.

Bunnings
A massive big thank you to all of the people who supported our Bunnings BBQ by coming along and buying a sausage but especially to the people who donated an hour or two of their time to help cook sausages and serve the many hungry people. It was a big day raising $1092.26 towards our school Eco Garden. If you missed out this time we will be having another BBQ fundraiser on the 6th August.

Cake Stall– Election Day
The Eco Garden will be having a cake stall at the Election on the 2nd July. They will be sending home cake plates and instructions for drop off closer to the time. If you are able to make something yummy and homemade that we can sell to support the gardens and animals please watch out for more information. We appreciate the support.

Plants
We have recently purchased some new finger limes for the garden. They are a great addition to any salad or nice as a tangy treat! Follow the steps in the Bush Tucker garden to try one out.

Newsletter Term 1, Week 8

2016 in the garden has started with great plans and exciting opportunities ahead. Several classes have already had the opportunity to cook and plant. K/1S beans are growing wildly. A garden full of basil is hoped to become a large range of cooking and eating opportunities. Our “girls” have settled in well and are slowly making their way through the long grass in their pen.

Once again the hardworking efforts of the parent, staff and student bodies have been vital in bringing the gardens to where they are today. From garden tidy up, feeding the compost, planting and harvesting, minding the chooks on the weekend the Eco Garden of HHPS is a combined community effort.

Next Meeting
The Eco Garden committee meets once a month and is an opportunity for parents to hear what is involved, how they can help out and make suggestions for the future. If you would like to attend you are welcome at any time. Our next meeting is this Wednesday, 16th March, in K/1S classroom at 7pm. This will be our AGM.

Working Bee
This Saturday, 19th March, from 9am there will be a working bee to conduct a general tidy up around the gardens, build a new raised garden bed, and perform some needed maintenance on the chook pen. If you have skills, tools or just a general hard working attitude please come along and help out – even for a short while! Many hands do make light work.

Planting
We will be preparing the garden with its winter crops and replanting the garden beds on the 31st March and 1st April. If you would like to come and help for the day or when your child’s class will be planting please contact Briony Scanlan or Rhonda French.

Animals
We are once again hoping to have some baby lambs but at this stage our current supplier doesn’t have any stock. We are looking into other options but if you know anyone who has sheep/ lambs and would be happy for us to raise some for them please contact the school. All animals are returned to the farm and looked after!
Coco and Chanel are happily ploughing through the fields in Dubbo where they have found their new home. They will soon be joined by another ex-student - Lola.
In the meantime feel free to visit the chooky girls and give them a pat – they are hand raised!

If you wish to know more or be involved in anyway please contact the school.

Newsletter Term 1, Week 4

Chooks
Over the holidays our little baby chicks raised by 4A 2015 grew into big chooks. A big thank you to the families who looked after them. All in all we ended up with 9 chooks. Unfortunately, 4 of them were roosters and have been returned to the farm so as to save our neighbours. We now have 5 beautiful remaining girls; Dusty, Spot, Ginger, Snowy and Mohawk Millie. Feel free to drop by the pen and say hello. They love a pat! Our girls love to have weekend visitors and spend time in their yard on the weekends. If you are able to visit the school twice a day on the weekend, once per term, please contact Briony Scanlan so you can be added to the Chook Minding roster.

Mini Working Bees
Our gardens are looking fabulous after a fantastic clean up last Friday. Each month on the second Friday happy volunteers meet in the garden from 2:30pm to do some general maintenance and tidying in the gardens. If you are able to turn up early please come along and help out.

Meetings
The Eco Garden Committee is comprised of teachers and parents, as well as a student committee. The adults meet monthly, on the third Wednesday to discuss finances; purchase of animal feeds and plants, organise cooking days for the students and when needed help out in the gardens. If this sounds interesting to you or you would like to find out more please contact Rhonda French. Our next meeting is Wednesday 17th February at 7pm in K/1S classroom (next to the Canteen). Feel free to drop in and join the team.

Getting Involved
The Eco Garden is a central part of our school and a whole community venture. If you are interested in helping with cooking, attending meetings or just being kept up to date with events please contact Rhonda French or Briony Scanlan.

It is with great excitement that we announce the arrival of three baby chicks! We put eggs into an incubator during the holidays and had our first attempt at raising chicks. There have been many predictions but we are waiting for certainty! They are being handled and happily have visitors so feel free to drop in : )

It was wonderful to see the hard work of parents and students recognised in the Hornsby Council’s Local Heroes article. If you didn’t get to read it please visit the Hornsby Shire Council Facebook Page.

Newsletter Term 3 Week 10

WORKING BEE
Many of you may have noticed that over the weekend a retaining wall and stairs were installed down the sides of the lamb pen. This has long been an area of concern with the slope of the hill and access to the animals. It was a most amazing event on Saturday and Sunday, with the involvement and support of many parents, teachers and school families. Construction began at 7am on Saturday morning. The borrowing of equipment from Paul Wheway at Kennards, the driving expertise of Floyd McCardle and his worker, James saw the excavation of the flat area and the building up of the hill. The planning and construction of Stuart Cameron and Justin Stack was instrumental in the building of the stairs and retaining wall. By tools down on Saturday excavation work was done and the bottom few stairs were constructed. Sunday was an open Eco Garden Working Bee with many families, children included, coming to assist in a tidy up and carrying out of maintenance around the garden area. Many were involved in aerating the oval. Construction of the stairs continued with the added efforts of many others carrying and mixing concrete, shovelling blue metal and cutting sleepers. A lovely morning tea provided by the ladies, Colleen Dancer, Rhonda French and Petra Holland, and then lunch for those who were still working hard. On Sunday night at 5:30pm the stairs and retaining wall were officially called done! A massive thankyou is not enough for the amazing efforts, support and help for all who were involved – so many to mention! (Mind you – the kids still walked down the dirt hill!!)

Lambs
The lambs are going to take a holiday along with the children and are going for a visit to the Cameron Family home. We are sure they will be well looked after and will enjoy the new play area.
After the holidays if you are keen to spend some time with them there will be a new roster created for lamb walking and feeding. If you would like more information or to sign up please email Ms Scanlan.

Newsletter Term 3 Week 4

Yes there are now 2!
Following the arrival of Lamb 1 we received another lamb. The lambs are borrowed from a farm where they will return at the end of the year. They are being fed a bottle of Lamb Milk replacer twice a day, pellets and chaff and Lucerne hay, as well as they graze on grass. Later this week and for subsequent weeks students will get to have a turn at bottle feeding. The babies are still adjusting to the large number of “people” in their paddock but are now more welcoming to visitors if you want to drop by one afternoon. A hand through the fence or a friendly voice is always welcome. We just ask that you don’t feed them anything as they are well looked after. In exciting news…….. they are no longer Lamb 1 and Lamb 2! We are very excited to welcome Coco and Chanel.

Handy on the Machinery?
We are looking to carry out a project that requires a 3.5t excavator and have kindly been offered the use of one. Now we just need a driver. ‘Benchy’ the Rabbit
As you are probably aware we did have a break in the weekend past and Benchy was taken from the lamb enclosure. The door hinge of the door was broken and the new shed roof also dented. Thankfully, through the wonderful community we live in Benchy was returned. Unfortunately, due to his safety he has now been taken home and will not be visiting school anymore. We hope to have the door hinge fixed soon.

Chooks
Our poor girls have reached that point in their life where they are no longer laying beautiful eggs. They have decided they are ready for the home pampered life. As a result we are asking if there is anyone in the school community that would like to adopt our girls and have them as pets (who knows they may like your home better and start laying again!). Otherwise, we would like someone to mind them during the holidays until a new home has been found. If you feel able to do either of these tasks please contact Briony

Pumpkin Competition
Last week the school entered a pumpkin in the Pumpkin Growing Competition at the Royal Easter Show. We are delighted to say our pumpkin came third weighing in at 18kg. If you are headed to Royal Easter Show this year, pop in and see the prize winning pumpkin. Congratulations Miss Stroak and all of the involved students and parents.

Cake Stall
A massive big thank you to all of the families that donated cakes for the cake stall or who dropped by to buy a cake or raffle ticket at the Election on Saturday. The funds raised go towards the Eco Garden and its continuing projects was $1900.

PAINT NEEDED!!!!
In interest groups on Fridays some of the students have started designing what will eventually become a fence for the Bush Tucker garden. They have been busy creating characters to be painted onto the fence. This will be a long term project but we need your help. The students have come up with great colourful designs and we are seeking OUTDOOR paint in a range of colours as well as any undercoat paint. If you have a tin with a little or a lot that is no longer needed at home could you please deliver to Miss Scanlon’s classroom. All donations are greatly appreciated.

Planting
Great fun was had by all students last week when they got to plant their garden beds. Students have all been involved in discussions around what to plant and last Thursday the wonderful mums and dads came and helped them plant. A few of the beds have had to be wallaby proofed over the weekend but hopefully after the holidays they will all be growing strong.

Watering in the holidays
As we have just planted the gardens leading up to the holidays we are looking for helpers who would be interested in coming and watering the garden beds every day or two (weather permitting) in the holidays. If you are able/ interested please let Briony know!

Newsletter Term 4 Week 10

Lambs
It is with much sadness that we will say goodbye to Lola and Luigi. They will be going back to their farm sometime over the next two weeks. I know the baaing will be missed by many.
Cooking
As we finish off the year we have been relishing the opportunity to cook the final products from the garden. Year 1 have been making tabouleh, spinach dip and beetroot dip. Kindy had a potato hunt and dug up their planted potatoes. The smell of cooking potato pizza was the envy of many in 5/6S. It has been a busy year of cooking with lots of yummy food.
Sign
You may have noticed a new sign has been installed in the garden. This is the Year 6 gift to the school, which they will present at Presentation Day. They are still putting the finishing touches on the letters which will be attached soon. If you are around feel free to have a look at the progress of the garden over the years as displayed in the cabinet.
THANKYOU!
As we approach the end of another busy Eco Garden year a massive big thankyou from the school and committee to all that have been involved and shared the journey of 2014; parents planting and cooking, animal caretakers, sausage flippers at BBQ fundraisers and labourers at the many working bees. All this help adds up to make the garden what it is today!

From all of the Eco Committee and members we wish you a safe and happy holiday! Stay tuned for another exciting year of digging, planting, cooking and growing!

5 Year Celebration
A wonderful day was had by all on Saturday at the 5 year celebration. Mr Matt Kean attended the event and cut the cake. A big thank you to all of the people who attended, especially the bakers and makers for a yummy afternoon tea.

Garden Produce
As we are fast approaching the holidays the gardens are blossoming and full of lovely green produce and time for school use is running out. If you are looking for something extra to add to your meals please visit the gardens in the afternoons this week and take a sample home. Fresh home cooked vegies make for delicious meals!

If you have a few spare days and would be happy to come to school and take them for a walk and give them some food for the holidays (please note they will be off bottles) please contact Briony Scanlon. I know that the lambs love visitors and it’s a great opportunity for you too!
