Newsletter: Term 4, Week 8

TATERS FOR TEA
I know we enjoyed our beautiful potatoes that came home recently. We hope all the other kindy families enjoyed theirs too!

BUZZ AT THE BEE
Thanks to our helpers last Sunday. We moved lots of turf to the kindy playground and some gums to the oval. It looks great!

FINAL MEETING
Our last meeting is on Wednesday, December 8 in the library. Bring a plate or something to drink. We will be celebrating a great year for our school garden.

MERRY CHRISTMAS
We would like to thank the entire school community for a wonderful year and look forward to many more gardening adventures and achievements in 2011.

MR GREEN THE GECKO SAYS “WHEN’S A CHOOK NOT A CHOOK?”

When it’s a tractor! Chook tractors and guineas pig tractors are an integral part of a permaculture garden. The animals have little ‘houses’ that move around the garden so they can feed on weeds and insects. They dig and scratch and aerate the soil. Their poo makes excellent food for the garden too!

Mr Green the gecko says ...

Phew! How hot was it at the weekend? Your gardens like the sun but they also need moisture when it gets hot and dry. Water your plants early in the morning or late in the afternoon. This reduces evaporation (when the water gets sucked up by the hot air, instead of being drunk by the plants).

CAN YOU SPARE SOME TIME THIS SUNDAY?
We are having a morning busy bee this Sunday the 21st from 8am. We thought we’d start early now the hot sun has arrived! We need to move some of the turf outside the new classrooms to more needy areas around the school.  The Eco Food Garden is going in next year and we just don’t need all that turf! Some lovely eucalypts will also be moved to more suitable areas. Bring along shovels, rakes, gloves, wheelbarrows etc... THANKYOU!!

THANKS TO OUR SPONSORS
A big thanks to Thomson Landscape & Garden Supplies and Bunnings Thornleigh for donating prizes for our fete raffle.

MR GREEN THE GECKO SAYS “PICK YOUR POTATOES”
Potatoes are ready to harvest when they grow flowers that are usually white, pink or purple. Another clue to their readiness is yellowing of the leaves.

McCAIN’S GOODIES
Thanks to everyone who brought in their McCain barcodes for the School Vege Promotion. We have been able to purchase a bird net to protect the fruit trees which will go into the garden next year, a watering can and some gloves.

KINDY TATERS
Hi Kindy mums and dads. Have a look at your children’s potato patch around near the bike racks. We planted them in some time ago and will harvest them some time this term. Please enjoy them with your kids when we send them home.

NEXT MEETING
We meet again in the library from 7pm on Wednesday, November 10. All welcome.
